Students are starting to unplug equipment so a reminder is in order.

Please Don't Damage Instructional Equipment.

Much of what we have in the labs comes from Grants and Special
Educational Discounts. Last year a number of systems have been damaged
due to students unpluginng live equipment or carelessness with the
floorboxes.

We have had the following occur on a frequent basis:

1. The old floorboxes in Soda Hall do not stay open on their own and
will crimp and smash cables.
2. We have had a number of PC's in the past suffer harddrive failure
due to students pulling the plug or turning off machines.

So please do not unplug our lab equipment or turn off the computers.

We have provided power strips in the labs for you to plug in personal
equipment. Please look for the power strips on top of the tables in 271,
273 and 275 Soda. 277 Soda now has a cleared off center row of tables
with two rather obvious 12 outlet power strips, however, a class uses
that lab and the schedule is posted on the door. If you can't find a
power strip near you, please move to another seat or another lab.

If these power strips are not meeting your needs please let us know by
emailing us at ***@eecs.berkeley.edu.

I would like to remind everyone again that we do have power strips for
you to use. Please do not open the floor boxes in our labs and unplug
our computing equipment. This frequently causes damage to our cables
and sometimes damages our computers. Please also do not unplug the
monitors, keyboards and mice to use on your laptop.

I can somewhat understand the need to get power for your laptop,
however, please look around you for the power strips. Frequently the
power strips are very near the floor boxes that do get opened. Please
take the time to look for the power strips. About two thirds of the
open floor boxes I find are within arms reach of a power strip. This
would not happen if you just pay some attention to your surroundings and
look for that power strip on the tables.

P.S. The money to pay for the damaged equipment comes from your tuition
fees and/or tax dollars.
